Cherokee, NC – The Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians (EBCI) joins communities across the nation in observing two important July awareness campaigns, the National Minority Mental Health Awareness Month and UV Safety Awareness Month. Together, both observances emphasize the deep connection between mental, physical, and cultural well-being.
EBCI wellness is rooted in balance honoring the connection between mind, body, spirit, and the natural world. This month offers an opportunity to highlight how protecting our physical health, especially our skin, goes hand-in-hand with nurturing emotional and mental wellness.
Honoring Mental Health in Our Community
Minority Mental Health Awareness Month raises awareness about the unique mental health challenges faced by Indigenous communities, including barriers to care, historical trauma, and stigma. EBCI encourages community members to prioritize mental wellness by:
· Seeking support through trusted providers and community resources
· Strengthening connections with family, culture, and tradition
· Engaging in activities that promote emotional balance, such as time in nature, storytelling, and cultural practices
Protecting Our People Under the Sun
UV Safety Awareness Month reminds us that while time outdoors is essential to our cultural and physical health, it is important to stay safe under the sun. Prolonged exposure to ultraviolet (UV) rays can increase the risk of skin cancer and premature aging.
Simple protective steps:
· Wear broad-spectrum sunscreen (SPF 30 or higher)
· Seek shade during peak sun hours (10 AM – 4 PM)
· Wear protective clothing, hats, and sunglasses
· Stay hydrated while spending time outdoors
A Holistic Approach to Wellness
By recognizing both observances together, EBCI highlights a shared message: caring for ourselves is an act of honoring our community and future generations. Spending time outdoors can improve mood, reduce stress, and support physical health but it’s important to do so safely and mindfully.
The Syringe Services Program will be holding POC Testing on July 7 from 11 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Tsalagi Public Health will also hold a Community POC Testing at the TPH Office at 73 Kaiser Wilnoty Road, Cherokee, NC on July 28 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. in observance of World Hepatitis Day.
