Cherokee, NC – Harrah’s Cherokee Casino Resort presented a $1 million donation to the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians for the Intellectual and Developmenta l Disabilities (IDD) Autism Enrichment Resource Center Project during a special ceremony on Wednesday, July 29. The center will be housed in the former Dialysis Center, with operations planned to begin in the fall of 2027.
“Three years ago, when this effort began under Principal Chief Michell Hicks’ administration, he said, ‘We can do better, and our people deserve better,’” said Public Health and Human Services Secretary Sonya Wachacha. “That statement became a catalyst that helped keep this project moving forward.”
The $1 million donation will support PHHS in developing the IDD Autism Enrichment Resource Center, which is designed to expand programs and services for community members with intellectual and developmental disabilities and autism. The project will focus on meaningful day programming, workforce readiness, cultural connection, and opportunities for individuals to participate more fully in community life.
“Every community member deserves to be treated with dignity and respect, and this generous donation reflects that shared commitment,” Secretary Wachacha added.
PHHS has worked to identify service gaps for individuals and families impacted by intellectual and developmental disabilities and autism, with a focus on building supports that are community-based, culturally connected, and responsive to long-term needs. The project reflects PHHS’ commitment to strengthening access to services, supporting families, and creating opportunities that promote independence, belonging, and quality of life.
The project has been advanced through collaboration among PHHS, EBCI executive leadership, Harrah’s Cherokee Casino Resort, Cherokee Indian Hospital Authority, Vocational Opportunities of Cherokee, Cherokee Central Schools, and other community partners who share a commitment to improving resources for enrolled members and families. PHHS will continue working with internal programs and external partners to develop services, staffing, and community-centered programming that support individuals across all stages of life.
